A History of the County of Middlesex II. General; Spelthorne Hundred (part); Hampton Court Edited by William Page Volume II was the first volume of the ancient county of Middlesex (absorbed into Greater London north of the Thames in the twentieth century) to be published and has been long out of print. It covers general topics dealing with all the ancient county except the City of Westminster. The archaeological record is supplemented by an inventory of medieval moated sites; other articles expand upon aspects of political, social and economic history. The volume also contains the first seven topographical articles on individual parishes: Ashford, East Bedfont with Hatton, Feltham, Hampton with Hampton Wick, Hanworth, Laleham and Littleton - all part of Spelthorne hundred in the extreme south-west of the county. The history of Hampton Court Palace is included in the parish accounts, complete with architectural description and plan made by Sir Charles Peers, and a survey of the pictures and gardens. The text is illustrated by fine pen and ink drawings characteristic of early VCH volumes. |
